Spring is starting to make a comeback (minus that snow storm many of us are getting this week) and with that many people are starting to add more miles to their training or starting to get into running for the first time. For that reason, I thought it’d be a good idea to talk about running shoes this week and running apparel next week. Do you agree? Super! Let’s do this.
One thing I try to emphasize with friends who are getting into running is the importance of good running sneakers. Running is great because it doesn’t take much, it doesn’t require expensive gear like so many other sports or hobbies, just you and whatever is on your body and feet. So you want to make sure you splurge on a good pair of shoes to keep you happy and injury-free.
Determining which pair of shoes is the best for you is the toughest part, but luckily there are tons of resources to help you! Runners World has an annual review of popular running shoes which I always like to look over, you can find it here.
Shoe guides are great to give you an initial idea, but it is SO important that you visit a running store that has experts and lets you “test out” (aka run around in) different shoes. I honestly can’t emphasize how important this is.
My two favorite stores in Massachusetts are Marathon Sports (multiple locations) and PR Running in Westborough. Both of these stores, and many others like it, will help you with sizing, find out what kind of running you do (trails, pavement, etc.), ask roughly how many miles you run per week, see how high your foot arches are, and will test you out in certain shoes based on your needs. They’ll also see how you run (do you over or under-pronate, what is your running gait like, etc.) and be able to help you find a shoe that will give you the right amount of support. Feel free to ask tons of questions when you go. In my experience these people are super friendly, know their information, and genuinely want to help find the best pair of running shoes for you.
In terms of price point, for a good pair of running shoes you should expect to pay between $100-160 depending on the type of shoe and brand. But again, this is where it’s ok to splurge because it’s the most important thing you need to invest in as a runner. After you purchase your new pair of running sneakers, take them out on shorter runs the first few times to break them in, never a long run.
Running shoes are good for approximately 300-500 miles, after that the support starts to give out and they need to be replaced. Some people say they can feel when this starts to happen, I personally can’t but I’ve learned that I go through 2-3 pairs of running shoes a year.
What running shoes do I wear? I’m loyal to Asics, specifically these. I’ve tried Saucony which I also like and Newton which I’m not as much of a fan. New Balance, Mizuno, and Brooks are a few other very popular brands which I haven’t tried out yet.
So, if you’re just starting to get into running or are simply due for a new pair (like I am!), get yourself over to a local running store and find your next perfect pair of running shoes!
