Mid-Holiday Season Sanity Check

Guys. The holiday season is in full swing. If you’re anything like me, you’re just hanging on for dear life at this point. The parties, the holiday events, the shopping, ohhh the shopping, and have you sent your holiday cards yet? Of course there’s also work, and if you happen to be in college or grad school it’s also finals week. Yup, survival mode. I actually love this time of year, I just wish there were more hours in the day. To be honest I’ve simply been getting the bare minimum in for my workouts and they’ve basically been gym sessions with cross training and strength work, the exception being some holiday 5ks. I ran the Winter Classic 5k this past weekend in Cambridge and will be running Somerville’s Jingle Bell Run this weekend!

How are you staying sane this holiday season?? Don’t skip those workouts – they help immensely I promise!

Gym Showdown: Planet Fitness vs. Gold’s Gym

Happy belated Thanksgiving! I hope everyone had a great holiday and enjoyed great food with even better company.

Believe it or not there are only 27 days left in 2013, which means those New Year’s resolutions aren’t that far away. For many people, that means making a resolution to get healthy, and getting started by joining a gym. Allow me to weigh in on which gym that should be, and more importantly shouldn’t be.

Holiday Races and a Budwesier Beer Tasting

I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Millennial Central for Budweiser. I received a product samples to facilitate my review and a promotional item to thank me for participating.

One thing I love about this time of year is holiday-themed races. I’m very selective with theme races and am not a fan of obstacle races, but give me a festive 5k and a turkey trot and I am one happy camper. Three things I love about these races? Friends, costumes, and a celebratory beer. It’s one of the few races where I’ll get dressed up and actually use the free beer ticket after finishing. When Budweiser recently asked me to sample some of their new Project 12 limited edition beers, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to invite a few friends over and plan out our festive running getups for the upcoming Jingle Bell Run in Somerville on December 15th!

Ready, Set, Goal!

After the marathon I took a serious break from running for about 2-3 weeks. I did this for two reasons, for one my body really needed the rest. I’ve had IT band issues on and off for the past few years so I’m always conscious of that and during marathon training one of my arches in my foot began to act up badly so I knew my legs needed the down time. The second reason is that I wanted time away from running so that I could miss it. I wanted to feel that sort of itch when you don’t run for a while. I’d been training for so many months and getting miles in simply because it was part of the training plan, I missed genuinely wanting to run for the sake of it and I knew a break would revive that feeling.

After those few weeks off I was definitely ready to get back out on the roads and was able to get some miles in this past weekend, but it’s time to set some new goals. Running a marathon was a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) for me and the longest distance I’ll race.

So how do you set a goal after that?

Marathon Playlist

If your iPhone needed a playlist refresh, I think we just became best friends. Remember that time I ran a marathon? Well, I had some great music pushing me all 26.2 miles and I’m so in love with this crazy playlist that I have to share it with you! My choice in music is very… comprehensive. Some of these have been on my running playlist forever, we’re talking years, and some are newer. I love them all, but I did *star* a few that I’m seriously crushing on at the moment. I hope you’re able to browse and find some fresh music to kick up your run or workout routine! Feel free to share some of your personal favorite tunes in the comments below!

Running Around Seattle

Any time I travel I always pack my sneakers and at least one set of running clothes. I think getting to run in different locations is a treat for me, it’s a chance to change up my normal running routine, have new scenery, and explore a new city or location on foot.

I’ve spent most of this week in Seattle, WA for work and am actually writing this post in the airport while waiting to board my red-eye back to the east coast. Before I write anything else I have to share that the only, as in there are no others in the US, Butter nail salon is located in the Seattle/Tacoma International Airport. Hello, pedicure. That in itself is a reason to visit this great state. Anyways, I digress.

Race Recap | Marine Corps Marathon

I remember one particular summer afternoon six years ago while training with a friend for our first 10k race. I distinctly remember saying after what was probably a 4-5 mile run that “I could never run a marathon”. Well, this past weekend I gave myself a huge dose of “never say never” when I completed my first marathon, the Marine Corps Marathon!

Last Minute Marathon Advice

Whew it feels like it’s been forever since my last post but it’s only been two weeks! I really wanted to get a post written last week but I just started a new job at work which I love and am excited to dive into but I’m also wrapping up a few things with my previous role so it’s definitely been a balancing act this past week and on top of that there’s grad school homework calling my name. But no matter what, running finds its way into my routine. I’m a firm believer that people will make time for the things they consider a priority, running included.

Inspiring Running Video

I have a video today to share with you. It’s a video of a 600m race at a collegiate indoor track championship in 2008.  If you’ve never seen this before, take a minute today to watch it and make sure you watch the whole thing. It’s less than 3 minutes long but captures everything that running (and I’m sure other things) is about – never ever giving up even when it seems like there’s no hope of accomplishing your goals. It gives me goose bumps every time I watch it and is one of my all-time favorite YouTube videos. Enjoy!
